Microsoft Edge user agent strings

The User-Agent and Sec-CH-UA headers the current Microsoft Edge (155) sends on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, what separates them from Chrome's, and the tokens Edge uses on mobile.

On every platform Edge 155 also sends Sec-CH-UA: "Microsoft Edge";v="155", "Chromium";v="155", "Not(A:Brand";v="24". When a site asks for the full version (Sec-CH-UA-Full-Version-List), the Microsoft Edge entry carries Edge's own build number (155.0.4283.62), which is not Chrome's build number at the same major.

The Windows string and its brand list match what we measured on Edge 153; the other platforms follow Chromium's frozen platform tokens, which Edge does not change, and Microsoft's documented EdgA format on Android.

Edge and Chrome side by side

Chrome 155 → Edge 155
User-AgentThe same string, with " Edg/155.0.0.0" appended (EdgA on Android).
Sec-CH-UA"Google Chrome" becomes "Microsoft Edge". The fake brand, its version and the order of the three entries follow the major version, so they are identical.
Sec-CH-UA-Platform, -MobileIdentical.
Full versionEdge's own build number, which differs from Chrome's at the same major.
Site overridesEdge only: a Microsoft-maintained list of per-site user agents (edge://compat/useragent).

Because the brand list is computed from the major version, Chrome 155 and Edge 155 put their brands in the same order. The Chrome user agent page explains the algorithm and has a generator that also produces Edge's headers for any version.

Edge on Android and iPhone

Android: Edge uses Chromium's reduced Android string, Linux; Android 10; K, whatever the device, and adds EdgA/155.0.0.0. The real Android version and the model are in Sec-CH-UA-Platform-Version and Sec-CH-UA-Model, sent only when a site asks. See Android user agents.

iPhone and iPad: Edge runs on Apple's WebKit, sends no Client Hints, and marks its string with EdgiOS/ and the app version (currently 155.4283.61 on the App Store). We have not verified the rest of the current EdgiOS string on a device, so it is not in the table; the other iOS browsers are on the iPhone user agent page.

How to tell Edge apart

  • In the string: Edg/, EdgA/ or EdgiOS/. A string with only Chrome/ is Chrome or another Chromium browser; Edge/ with no a is the legacy EdgeHTML browser.
  • In the headers: "Microsoft Edge" in Sec-CH-UA. A string that says Edg/ with a brand list that says Google Chrome, or no brand list at all over HTTPS, did not come from Edge.
  • Not the engine: Edge and Chrome of the same major share the Blink engine, so feature tests cannot separate them. Microsoft itself recommends checking for the Chromium brand when what you care about is the engine.

Compare with the base it is built on: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/155.0.0.0 Safari/537.36 is Chrome 155 on Windows.

FAQ

What is the latest Microsoft Edge user agent?

Edge 155 on Windows sends Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/155.0.0.0 Safari/537.36 Edg/155.0.0.0, with Sec-CH-UA: "Microsoft Edge";v="155", "Chromium";v="155", "Not(A:Brand";v="24". The table above has every platform.

How is the Edge user agent different from Chrome's?

It is Chrome's string with Edg/155.0.0.0 added at the end, and its Sec-CH-UA list says Microsoft Edge where Chrome's says Google Chrome. Everything else, including the frozen platform and the order of the brands, is the same as Chrome 155's.

Why Edg and not Edge?

The token Edge/ belonged to the old Microsoft Edge (EdgeHTML engine, up to version 18). Microsoft chose Edg/ for the Chromium-based Edge so that sites would not apply workarounds meant for the old browser. A string with Edge/18 is the legacy browser, which is no longer supported.

What is the Edge user agent on Android and iPhone?

On Android, Chrome's reduced Android string with EdgA/: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 10; K) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/155.0.0.0 Mobile Safari/537.36 EdgA/155.0.0.0. On iPhone and iPad, Edge uses Apple's WebKit like every iOS browser and identifies itself with EdgiOS/ followed by the app version; it sends no Client Hints there.

How can a site tell Windows 11 from Windows 10 in Edge?

Not from the string, which says Windows NT 10.0 on both. The site has to ask for Sec-CH-UA-Platform-Version with an Accept-CH response header; Microsoft's detection guide lists which values mean which Windows.

Why does Edge send a different user agent to some sites?

Edge Stable and Beta carry a list of site-specific user agent overrides, for sites that do not recognise Edge yet. Open edge://compat/useragent to see the list, or start Edge with --disable-domain-action-user-agent-override to turn it off. Canary and Dev do not receive the list.

How do I change the user agent in Edge?

Open DevTools (F12), then the Network conditions panel, untick "Use browser default" and pick or type a user agent. It applies while DevTools is open, to that tab. Like every override it leaves the Client Hints and the engine reporting the real browser; see how to change your user agent.
